Review – Meet the Cutter at Summa Jewelers

I haven’t been posting much lately as I’ve had my  nose buried in my GIA books. But recently I had a diamond related experience that I wanted to share. A couple weeks ago, I was invited to a “Meet the Cutter” event at Summa Jewelers right here in St. Louis, and I was sure glad I went. They were showcasing the Sirius Star diamond – a new ideal cut that’s a whole different ball game, and an absolute home run!

During the event, I got to try my hand at diamond cutting and polishing, and I wasn’t half bad! Though Mike and Evert, the masterminds behind the Sirius Star, who are both very kind and pleasant, probably would not have told me had I been terrible at it. I also got to pick the Sirius Star out of a line up. Jim mixed one in with a couple Infinity diamonds he had on hand. Lastly, I was able to look at a large round (2.5+ct, drool) and a smaller cushion through a H&A viewer and an ASET, and what a light show!

What I learned is the Sirius Star is a modern cut with origins stemming from an antique cut (high crown, smallish table, flowery facet pattern). In theory, though perhaps not in proportion, it is an AGS0 version of a transitional cut. Most ideal cut diamonds still have approximately 7% light leakage, whereas the Sirius Star has none. Furthermore, unlike the traditional brilliant cut, the Sirius Star has faceting at the very culet, which creates a star pattern when you look through the table. Master Diamond Cutters makes Sirius Star cushions, oval, marquises, etc (that’s new, right?). Ideal cut ovals and marquises!

 

Bottom line: I want one… or two for earrings . Thanks Summa and Master Diamond Cutters, all I needed was another diamond obsession.
